Hong Kong Domestic Workers in Central

Apart from spending time in Hong Kong's parks on Sundays, many of the region's domestic workers set-up camp on the outdoor skywalks that connect skyscraper to skyscraper. One such skywalk can be found in Central where early in the morning women construct cardboard shelters and spend the day sleeping, eating, playing games and relaxing. Central is also the place where the women can box and ship huge care packages to their families back in Indonesia and The Philippines. Their Sunday activities cause parts of Central to become chaotic and messy hullabaloos, and normally empty sidewalks and walkways become obstacle courses to a passerby. The Hong Kong police leave the women alone though, so long as they aren't caught selling home-cooked food, which many of the women make and sell to make some extra money on the side. They are more than happy to share though, free of charge, if you are a curious Westerner interested in trying Indonesian or Filipino cuisine.

While photographing my Sundays project in Kowloon Park one day, I saw this woman in the public restroom. She was getting ready for a dance performance that was to take place in the park that afternoon. I asked if I could quickly take her photo, and she fortunately obliged. A popular activity among the domestic workers who congregated in Hong Kong's parks on Sundays is choreographed dances. Whether in street-style attire, or traditional costumes, numerous dance routines could be watched as one strolled through the park.

In Hong Kong, it is not unusual for many middle class families to have a live-in maid. Unlike in the U.S., it is not seen as a symbol of wealth but is relatively commonplace. These domestic workers are often from the Philippines, Indonesia and other, poorer countries that surround Hong Kong. Though they get paid very little, they are provided with free room and board, and often make much more than they would in their own country. Sundays is their one day off from work, and since none have a home of their own they must congregate outside. They meet in parks, on stairways and in skywalks, setting up makeshift nooks made out of plastic and cardboard. They dance, play card games, nap, eat, flirt and enjoy each other's company. Not all of the women are domestic workers, but all of them are Hong Kong minorities.

Though they can literally take up entire pathways on Sunday afternoons, Hong Kongers seem to mostly ignore their presence, and the women are rarely, if ever, hassled. I have begun a portrait project on this cultural phenomenon using a newly acquired Yashica Mat-124G medium format film camera. Above are some images from two Sunday trips to Kowloon Park, a popular meeting place for the women. The women participate in various activities on their day off, such as hanging out in the park, eating elaborate meals, going clubbing and drinking, or sending boxes of products back home to their families. Since there are many meeting points, as well as visual and cultural themes I want to explore, I will continue working on this project as long as I'm in Hong Kong...

A French woman (below) has hundreds of trained pigeons outside the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France. She gives visitors bread and rice to feed the pigeons, which will flock to anyone with food in his/her hand. She stood in the freezing cold all afternoon feeding her pigeons, talking to people and getting her photo taken. No one was allowed to catch or run after her pigeons.
